“All the rights secured to the citizens under the Constitution are worth nothing, and a mere bubble, except guaranteed to them by an independent and virtuous Judiciary.” – Andrew Jackson

The recent Supreme Court judgement on the Imo State 2019 Gubernatorial Election that sacked Emeka Ihedioha as the Governor of Imo State and installed Senator Hope Uzodinma as the new Governor has thrown up a lot of reactions and commentaries among Nigerians. The judgement was received with despair and joy, fervour and apathy, acrimony and goodwill depending on the divide someone belongs to.

Many attributed the judgement to the famous New Year Message by the controversial Catholic Priest Rev. Fr Ejike Mbaka where he prophesied that ‘hope, hope, hope’ is coming to Imo State. Therefore, the Supreme Court judgement on the Imo State Gubernatorial Election came as a result of the fulfillment of the prophetic declaration by Rev Fr Ejike Mbaka. As far as they are concerned, nobody should question God. after all, a natural man cannot comprehend the things of the spirit.

The judgement was also seen by others as a judicial suicide by the Supreme Court. The question on the lips of many Nigerians is how Hope Uzodinma, the candidate of All Progressive Congress, with 96,458 votes could unseat Emeka Ihedioha who garnered 276,404 according to the official results released by the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC).

This judgement by the Supreme Court was based on the testimony of Rabiu Hassaini, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) who supervised the elections and by law is entitled to duplicates of the original results sheets from 388 polling units where the votes earned by the APC candidate, Sen. Hope Uzodinma were wrongfully excluded. The tribunal dismissed ‘this’ evidence by the DCP on grounds that he did not have the authority of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to testify before the tribunal and therefore rejected his testimony.

At the appellate court, the four judges ruled against the evidence by the DCP except one judge who said that PDP didn’t prove whether the results by the DCP were fake, if the results weren’t fake then the appellant won the Imo State Gubernatorial Election when the additional votes of 213,695 is added to the original 96,458.

The Supreme court based her judgement on this fact to declare Hope Uzodinma as the duly elected Governor of Imo State.

Some questions we want to know as follows, (I), does the new votes allocated to the APC candidate tally with the total number of accredited voters? The simple arithmetic that does with elections in Nigeria states that accredited voters = total valid votes cast + total invalid votes cast.
(2) How did the Supreme Court prove the results tendered by the DCP were genuine because in the earlier judgement given during the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), the Supreme Court told the PDP candidate to produce 250,000 witnesses from the various polling units across the country to prove the regularity and irregularity of the results by INEC? The highest court has a clear case to answer here.

Since logic has been thrown out of the window because of Rev Fr Mbaka’s prophecy, we implore the cleric to tell us how to save the lives of people murdered in Nigeria daily, how Nigeria can come beyond her present quagmire, because we haven’t arrived at a logical conclusion on the way forward for Nigeria. Maybe, the Oracles are only interested in election matters in Nigeria. Whatever might be the sins of Emeka Ihedioha that made the Oracles to pass a vote of no confidence on him, we implore Rev Fr Mbaka that many more bad leaders who are behind the endless miseries of Nigerians need to be visited by the Oracles.
