Sheikh Abubakar Ahmad Gumi, a well-known Muslim cleric, has criticized President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration and the Department of State Services (DSS) for detaining Mallam Tukur Mamu, his aide.

The divisive cleric expressed his optimism that the current administration would successfully complete its term in office in the coming months during a sermon he gave on Saturday at the Sultan Bello Mosque.

Sheikh Gumi claimed that Mamu’s arrest by the secret police was unjustified and that he should be freed or brought to court right away since the security agency’s decision to keep him in custody and intimidate him constitutes an act of terrorism.

The clergyman continued by stating that it was required by law for anyone detained in connection with an accused offense to appear in court within 24 hours of their detention.

Gumi said Mamu’s only crime was his role in assisting victims of terrorist attacks to regain their freedom.

The cleric, who said God has a way of testing a believer, added that the arrest of Mamu was God’s way of testing his faith, praying that Mamu would overcome it.

He said: “Take him to court let the Court face trial, keeping him in custody despite being a family man was just to intimidate him. This intimidation is also terrorism. Arresting people unjustly is also terrorism; just like the terrorists do by going to somebody’s house to kidnap him.

“How can we continue in this situation under a government that is about to wind up? Our hope is for them to finish successfully not in a bad light. It’s not about Tukur Mamu, you all know that whenever they arrest innocent people, I always talk, not to talk of someone that I know and. I’m only advising the government to release him so that we can apologize to him to forget what happened.”
