In Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will launch its 2023 presidential campaign on Monday.

The PDP is making every effort to win back the presidency in the general elections of 2023 after losing it to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015.

Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president who ran as the PDP’s candidate in the 2019 elections but lost to the APC, will still be the party’s nominee in the 2023 general election.

PDP has made every effort to make sure that its campaign will allow them to win the next general elections.

In an effort to seize control of the government, the main opposition party established a Presidential Campaign Council under the direction of Aminu Tambuwal, governor of Sokoto State, and Udom Emmanuel, governor of Akwa Ibom State.

The PDP also named Raymond Dokpesi as deputy director of technical and systems, Liyel Imoke as deputy director general of operations, Prof. Adewale Oladipu, a former national secretary of the party, as deputy director of administration, and Ekwesilieze Nwodo as deputy director of research and strategy of the National Campaign Management Committee.

Former Vice President Namadi Sambo, former Senate Presidents Anyim Pius Anyim, David Mark, and Bukola Saraki, members of the National Assembly, former governors, and former ministers are also on the campaign council.

However, stakeholders in the PDP are concerned that the internal conflict inside the party may undermine their efforts to defeat other political parties in 2023.

Some participants thought the situation may hinder the PDP’s capacity to run an effective campaign in some states across the nation.

According to a PDP secretariat source who talked with The Sun, the party is concerned about internal strife as the 2023 election season gets underway.

The source said, “The 2023 poll is ours to lose. But we cannot afford to go to the election with a divided house. If we do, it may cost us dearly.”

The PDP has been attempting over the past few months to highlight the distinctions between Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, and Atiku, the party’s presidential candidate.

As part of the conflict, Governor Wike’s camp has demanded that Iyorchia Ayu, the party’s national chairman, be replaced in exchange for its support of Atiku in 2023.

In an effort to emphasize its demand, the Governor Wike camp left the PDP campaign council.

Before they withdrew, PDP appointed the governor of Oyo State, who supports Wike, as the Vice Chairman (South) for the campaign council, along with Wike, Samuel Ortom (Benue State), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu State), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia State).

As the PDP launches its presidential campaign on Monday with a split house, Segun Sowunmi raised concern.

But he added that there is still hope since disgruntled party members can still work together before the general election in 2023.

Sowunmi said, “it will be interesting to see how the citizens, who are made up of more than 80 million registered voters, how they interpret what their own individual role is in terms of determining who will be the next leader of the country. So, all hope is not lost.”

A former PDP national vice chairman (South), Eddy Olafeso in a chat with The Sun called on aggrieved stakeholders in the party to bury their hatchet.

Eddy said, “we don’t have to fight each other. Enough of the ugly mess. And abuses of one another. It will not augur well for anybody to continue to fight at this moment. The only people that we need to fight is the APC that has led very backward governance and ruined virtually everything for the country.”
