The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) denies concluding a strike-calling deal with the Federal Government.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, on October 14th, ASUU ended the eight-month strike and instructed its members to return to school.

But on Monday, Emmanuel Osodeke, the president of ASUU, revealed during a meeting with the House leadership that the union had not signed a contract with FG.

However, the union and the House leadership had already come to an understanding before the court’s decision.

According to Osodeke, lecturers acted in good faith by calling off the strike without any written agreement.

Osodeke said, “The strike we called off, our members did it based on trust in us and the way the speaker has intervened, three meetings now, it was on that basis we were able to convince them.

“What we agreed on the issue of IPPIS and UTAS is a temporary measure. We were challenged to do it. We had to spend our money and our resources. In 2020, we were challenged to produce it.”

There is no need for ASUU to want a written agreement, said House Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila in response to Osodeke’s statement, adding that the House is collaborating with the government.

Gbajabiamila cited President Muhammadu Buhari’s inclusion of N470 billion in the budget for 2023 as well as the agreement to modify the IPPIS to take into account the unique requirements of ASUU.

In order to solve the problems facing the industry, he noted, legislators will organize a summit on education.
