NNPC Reveals How Many Illegal Pipeline Connections Found

On Wednesday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited announced the discovery of 295 illicit pipeline connections.

Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC, made the announcement at the Legislative Transparency & Accountability Summit in Abuja.

“We have seen thousands of illegal refineries that we have taken down in the last 45 months. We have seen connection in a 200 kilometre line. we have up to 295 illegal connections to our pipelines and many of them have been there for years,” he said.

The House of Representatives Anti-Corruption Committee organized the summit, which had the theme ‘Enhancing Transparency & Accountability in the Oil & Gas Sector.’

According to Kyari, oil theft reduced production to around 1.1 million barrels from 1.8 million in January of last year.

He did, however, clarify that not all of the oil was stolen, stating that “businesses will cease pouring oil into the pipeline the moment they learn that they cannot access to the port.”
