The Afiaolu Nnewi 2023, Kicked off today with a grand opening ceremony at the popular Nkwo-Nnewi triangle with the presence of royalties and Palace Cabinets led by the paramount traditional ruler of Nnewi and arguably the oldest serving monarch in the world, HRH, Igwe K.O.N Orizu.
Also in attendance were the Obi of Uruagu, Obi Afam (Ogidi IV) Obi Umudim, Obi Benneth Okafor (Amaukwu Umudim), Obi Nnewichi, Obi George Onyekaba, all representing the various quarters of Nnewi.
The ceremony started with the Iwa-Oji by Igwe Orizu who prayed earnestly for the fruitfulness of ndi Nnewi. In his remarks, the Chairman of the event, the National Organising Secretary of Labour Party, Mr. Clement Ojukwu (gbazuoagu Nnewi) welcomed the guests in his opening remarks.

The welcoming speech was delivered by the President General of Nzuko Ora Nnewi, Dr. Maduka Atueyi, in his speech commended the Igwe, the three serving monarchs for their pro-activeness in serving the people of Nnewi and senator representing Anambra South senatorial zone for his effort in bringing development and security to Nnewi.
He however, commended the Governor of Anambra State, Governor Chukwuma Soludo represented by Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Comrade Don Onyenji for the road construction going on Nnewi and he aslo use same medium in calling the attention of the Governor to othe pressing issues that need attention, such as road, state infastructural project, Health Centres.
His words, “I want to use this medium to thank the Governor for the road construction going on at Uruagu Nnewi, we also want his to do more roads in Nnewi because there’s no good road in Nnewi anymore. Theres literally less state infrastructural project in Nnewi and we deserve one”.
Nnewi Afia Olu Festival: The Need for Rebranding
The Senator representing Anambra South senatorial district, Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah earlier added glamour to the already glamourous event when he paid homeage to the three traditional rulers of Nnewi communities with twenty Tubers of Yam and a goat while giving thirty Tubers of Yam and a cow for Igwe Nnewi, HRH K.O.N Orizu.
Many prominent sons of Nnewi were present including, the Chairman, Nzuko-Ora Nnewi Board of Trustees, Sir D. C. Ofordeme KSJ, KSS, Hon Donatus Onyenji, the commissioner for culture, Entertaiment and Tourism, Chief Kenneth Maduako, CEO KM Oil and Gas, the National Organising Secretary of Labour Party, Mr. Clement Ojukwu, the T.C Chairman of Nnewi, Engr. Chris Obiorah.
The event also featured several cultural dancing groups from Different quarters that made up the city as well as Wresting competition and hunters group exhibitions.
However, this year Afia-olu Nnewi cultural festival saw the presence of one multinational companies; Guiness brewery.

The high point of the event was during the wrestling competition, where Uruagu defeated Otolo, while Nnewichi won the reigning champion, Umudim by submission. The final will take place on the 25th August 2023.
