Tragedy struck in the Ibas community of Emuoha Local Government Area in Rivers State, Nigeria, as an illegal oil refining site became the scene of a devastating explosion. The incident resulted in a significant loss of life, leaving a community in mourning.

The explosion occured when a group of individuals from the community engaged in the dangerous practice of scooping petroleum products at the illegal refining site. Tragically, the consequences were catastrophic.

The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Basil Igwebueze, and Emuoha Local Government Area Chairman, Chidi Lloyd, both confirmed the incident. Igwebueze provided grim details of the tragedy, revealing that a pregnant woman, the son of the illegal refinery operator, and a young lady who was about to get married were among those who perished in the explosion.

The cause of the explosion was traced back to a local refinery cooking pot situated perilously close to an oil reservoir containing highly combustible materials. The escalating temperatures eventually ignited a devastating fire, leading to the catastrophe.

Commandant Igwebueze expressed his dismay at the unrelenting activities of individuals involved in illegal petroleum product operations, highlighting the dangers posed by local refineries. He called for a united effort involving traditional institutions, community youths, religious leaders, and others to combat oil bunkering in the region.
