Yenagoa and its surrounding areas in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, have been grappling with a prolonged power outage, leaving residents frustrated. The blackout was attributed to a tragic motor accident that occurred near the Opolo area of the state capital a few weeks ago.

Mr. Olice Kemenanabo, the Managing Director of the Bayelsa Electricity Company Limited and Chairman of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, addressed the issue in a statement he released to journalists on Tuesday.

Kemenanabo expressed deep regret about the ongoing blackout, explaining that the power interruption was a direct result of a vehicular accident. A vehicle crashed into an electric pole in the Opolo area, causing extensive damage to several other electric poles. Tragically, two lives were lost in the incident.

The repercussions of this accident were far-reaching. The damaged electric poles triggered a fault that impacted the 132/33kV Transmission Substation at Gbarain. The collision caused a significant explosion, resulting in a fire that engulfed the 33kv feeder switchgear, the protection and control systems, and other essential electrical equipment.

Kemenanabo clarified that the damaged transmission substation was not under the jurisdiction of the state but rather the responsibility of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which owns the asset. However, Governor Douye Diri directed the state Ministry of Power and the management of Bayelsa Electricity Company Limited to collaborate with TCN and relevant agencies to assess the situation and expedite the restoration of the power supply.

The Managing Director reassured residents that the state government was actively working with federal agencies to resolve the issue promptly and restore electricity to the affected areas. He also called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, as vandals might attempt to take advantage of the situation.

Kemenanabo concluded by emphasizing that regular updates would be provided as progress is made toward fully restoring power to the affected regions.
