The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has raised concerns about alleged attacks by some army officers in the state against contractors involved in road construction. He made this call during a courtesy visit by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

Governor Fubara expressed his dismay over a specific road construction project in Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area, where contractors were reportedly being hindered by military personnel attached to a particular company. The governor stressed his commitment to resolving the issue but cited challenges due to the vested interests of the officers involved. He urged the Chief of Army Staff to intervene and caution these officers to allow the construction work to proceed without further disruption.

Governor Fubara also addressed the issue of illegal oil bunkering in the state, identifying it as a significant problem exacerbated by the involvement of the military and major oil companies. He raised concerns that some army officers may have compromised their positions in certain areas of the state.

In response, Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja assured the governor of the military’s continuous support and cooperation to maintain peace and stability in the state. He emphasized the need for the army to play its role in safeguarding the nation’s economic interests, particularly in the oil industry.

He warned against collusion with economic saboteurs involved in oil theft, kidnapping, and other criminal activities, stating that such actions make individuals enemies of the nation.

The Army Chief commended the Anti-Bunkering Unit of the 6 Division for its efforts in combating oil theft and improving crude oil output in the Niger Delta region. He urged soldiers to maintain their commitment to these efforts and remain disciplined in their duties.

In another development, Governor Fubara pledged continued support for sporting activities in the state, emphasizing the importance of using sports to engage and deter misguided youths from criminal activities. He made this assurance during a visit by the Rivers Hoopers Basketball Club, who presented their trophy to him at the Government House. The governor encouraged the team to work hard with discipline and demonstrate their potential to become the best in their field.
