Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, Nigeria, has found himself at the center of political turmoil as the State House of Assembly appeared to be on the verge of initiating an impeachment process against him. Fubara, however, strongly refuted any wrongdoing, stating that he had not committed any offense that would warrant impeachment.

Addressing his supporters at the Assembly Complex, Governor Fubara questioned the basis for the impeachment proceedings, demanding that those behind the move should clearly state the alleged offenses. He reassured the people of Rivers State that he remained committed to delivering the benefits of democracy to them.

Governor Fubara asserted, “Let them come out and tell Rivers people the offense I have committed to warrant any impeachment.” He also promised to address the matter at the appropriate time. It was evident that he intended to maintain his focus on governance while responding to the situation as needed.

The unfolding crisis at the Rivers State House of Assembly had been brewing for some time. In the midst of the impeachment rumors, the House took a significant step by removing its leader, Edison Ehie. The Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, along with other members, served an impeachment notice on Governor Fubara. The tension escalated to a point where tear gas was fired outside the Assembly Complex, causing further chaos and confusion.

This political turbulence followed a fire that had broken out at the Assembly Complex the previous night. While it remained unclear whether the fire was directly linked to the ongoing political strife, rumors of a rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who now serves as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, had been circulating for some time.
