As the nationwide strike, called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), commences today, the Minister of Labour, Employment, and Productivity, Simon Lalong, has initiated an urgent meeting with labour leaders. Scheduled for Tuesday, the meeting aims to address the grievances that led to the strike.

Background of the Strike

The labour unions, on Monday, directed their affiliates to withdraw their services nationwide from midnight on November 14, 2023. This move is in protest of the assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero and other executives in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1. The strike also addresses pending labour issues in Imo State.

TUC President’s Statement

Festus Osifo, President of TUC, declared that the strike would persist until “government at all levels wake up to their responsibility.” The assault on Joe Ajaero in Imo State has been a focal point, leading to the decision for a nationwide strike.

Minister’s Intervention

The Minister of Labour’s meeting with the labour leaders is seen as an attempt to mediate and find a resolution to the issues prompting the strike. The outcome of this meeting could have a significant impact on the duration and intensity of the nationwide industrial action.

Presidency’s Response

In response to the planned strike, the Presidency characterized it as an attempt to blackmail the government. Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, noted that the strike is an abuse of privilege and contradicts a restraining order by the Industrial Court against such action. Onanuga emphasized that the assault on Ajaero in Imo, while condemnable, should not lead to nationwide consequences.
