The Plateau State Police Command recently thwarted a potentially devastating suicide bombing attempt at a UBA branch in Jos. The would-be bomber, identified as Benjamin Basil, a student at Plateau State Polytechnic, was apprehended by law enforcement after a tense standoff.
According to Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, the incident unfolded on May 13, 2024, around noon. Basil entered the bank with what appeared to be explosive devices strapped to his body, demanding a staggering sum of N100 million from the cashier. Threatening to detonate the explosives if his demands were not met, Basil sent shockwaves of fear throughout the bank.
Thankfully, quick thinking by the bank attendant averted a potential catastrophe. The manager was promptly alerted, who, in turn, contacted the police. With remarkable efficiency, customers were safely evacuated from the premises. As police reinforcements arrived, Basil, realizing his plan had been foiled, attempted to flee but was swiftly apprehended with the assistance of both officers and courageous local youths.
