ZARIA PRODUCED HIGHEST VOTES FOR PRESIDENT BUHARI

The ancient city of Zaria has emerged as the local government with highest votes for President Muhammadu Buhari in the last Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The result of the elections showed that Zaria gave the president 111,082 votes, and therefore became the local government with highest number of votes for the president among the 774 local governments of the federation.

This performance made the Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufa’i, to shower praises on the residents of the area for their “unalloyed support” to the president.

However, residents of the area saw the feat as nothing surprising, as the city has been with the president since his advent into politics in 2003.

One of the residents, Yunus Ahmad, said the votes could have been higher had 70 per cent of the eligible voters came out to vote.

He added: “Zaria has been one of the strongholds of the president. Residents of the city practice politics of ideology. This was why during the first and second republics the city has been the stronghold of the NEPU and PRP, respectively.

“We know what we want from any particular politician. Zaria always votes for people with integrity not moneybags. We believe that somebody with integrity and honesty would always do the biddings of the common man and this is why Zaria is always with President Buhari.”

Immediately after the announcement of the presidential result, wild and simultaneous jubilations broke out in different parts of the city.

Our correspondent observed that the city is still in celebration mood with the flags of the APC flying in different parts of the city. Youths, especially, now adorn themselves with either face-cap or shirts that bear the logo of the APC.
