Coconu Kicks Off Table Tennis Championship In Enugu

A non-governmental organization known as Carl Oliver Christian Odumegwu Ndubisi Ugwunkwo foundation, COCONU, has concluded plans to kick off a one day table tennis championship in Oji River, Enugu State.

The one day Tennis Championship will take place at St Paul’s College Oji River in Oji River local government area of Enugu State in November 15, 2019 involving male and female categories.

The Chairman organizing committee of the tournament, Mr Pius Ezechukwu who disclosed this in Enugu said that the tournament was in remembrance of his nephew, Carl Ugwunkwo, a Sheffield University graduate and keen sports man.

According to Ezechukwu, Carl Ugwunkwo played Rugby Football in London for London Nigerian Rugby Football team where he distinguished himself.

“He was named the London Nigerian Club man of the year 2003 and he died in London in 2006 at 32 years”he said.

He said the tournament was begun in 2013 by the foundation and this year’s competition is expected to bring together, a greater number of both male and female players from Oji River local government area of Enugu state.

He stated that it remains one of the efforts of the foundation to mobilize the youths of the area to engage in sporting activities.

Ezechukwu further noted that the foundation also intends to finance other sporting competitions in addition to the table tennis tournament that will be taken place on 15 November, 2019.
