It is no secret that the security architecture of Nigeria under the control of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has collapsed. The president has grown numb to the incessant killings by bandits, kidnappers, murderous herdsmen, Boko Haram, ISWAP and other numerous killings that don’t make the headlines.
He has also not decided to sack the inefficient Service Chiefs whose tenures had expired for reasons best known to him. The present administration has decided to use propagandas and half-truths to convince themselves that they are working. Nigerians, on the other hand, have finally resorted to self-help and prayers, however, it seems that the more Nigerians are praying, things are getting worse everyday.

Maybe out of anger or frustration, Sen Enyinnaya Abaribe, the Minority Leader at the Nigerian Senate called out our “sleeping president”.

“When I was coming, I saw a headline of one of the national dailies , the Commander-In-Chief expresses shock at the level of violent crime, in other words Mr president was expressing surprise,”

“If you want to treat an issue, you go to the head. We did not appoint the IG or the security chiefs. We will go to the president and ask him to resign,” the lawmaker said.

As expected, Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity to the Buhari’s in his response to Sen Abaribe resorted to insults.

The biggest casualty with all these self-denials and self-delusion by the present administration is the debasing of human lives, life is becoming very cheap in Nigeria. It was very surprising that Nigerians cried when Kobe Bryant and his daughter died, but when Boko Haram or bandits attack and main their fellow countrymen and women, people go on with our daily lives as if nothing happened.

Terrorism Is Threatening Our Unity As Nigerians – Buhari

As a result of these, the killing and slaughtering of our fellow countrymen has been reduced to mere ‘news’, ‘statistics’ and ‘comparisons’. We have heard statements like, “more Nigerians died under the PDP administration than in APC administration”. The number of deaths is reported as football and basketball scores. There is no anger or outrage when deaths are reported.

We urge the president to take the issue of security seriously, feigning ignorance when the nation is burning is unacceptable. The Nigerian President has the Army, Navy, Airforce, Police, State Security Service (SSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIS) at his disposal, he can’t claim he’s not briefed about the abysmal state of our national security. If he feels the people in charge of our internal security are not top of the situation, they should be changed without blinking an eye. However, if he feels helpless, he should resign.

All Nigerians should take this issue of security seriously. The Southern part of Nigeria cannot be insulated from the effects of insecurity in the Northern part of Nigeria. When communities are displaced and economic activities are disrupted, the affected people will migrate to other parts of the country, they’re putting pressure on the existing lean social infrastructure available in other states. The Southern states have over the years, experienced a high influx of people from the Northern part of the country as a result of collapsed internal security.

We only have this nation Nigeria to call our own, no matter how angry we are at the incompetence and ineptitude of this present administration, the bitter truth is that nobody can help us, every country has their own internal problems to deal with.
