As governments across the world continue to grapple with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, China, where the coronavirus was detected last December, is now facing a new health threat from another virus, that is tick-borne. The virus causes a disease called “Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS). According to reports, it has already killed seven people and infected at least 60, setting off alarm bells among health officials in the country.

 

The Nigeria Centers for Disease Control, NCDC, as at 1150 pm, on Thursday 6th August, confirmed 345 new cases in the country, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Nigeria to 45 244. According to NCDC, 32430 persons have recovered while 930 deaths have been recorded across the country. FCT had the highest number of cases with 78 new cases and Lagos recorded 76 new infections.

The federal government has asked airlines in the country to begin the process for the resumption of international flights. The federal government had banned international flights in March as parts of measures to check the spread of COVID-19. But on Thursday, Sani Aliyu, national coordinator of the presidential task force on COVID-19, asked the aviation authorities and airline operators to begin the process for the resumption of international flights.

 

A Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have resolved to proceed on strike immediately schools reopen. Samson Ugwoke, Chairman, Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the unions, made the disclosure at a press briefing on Thursday in Abuja. Ugwoke, also SSANU President, and NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, signed the resolution.

Premier League clubs have voted to return to a maximum of three substitutes and seven players on the bench for next season. The vote of the 20 clubs at their virtual summer meeting is understood to have demonstrated the divisions that exist. While the top half of the league backed Chelsea proposals to continue to allow five substitutes from a bench of nine, they fell well short of the required two thirds majority.

 

A Nigerian woman who was badly injured in the Beirut explosion in Lebanon has called out for help from her hospital bed. The woman, identified as Nkiru Obasi, explained that she recently got a job to care for an old person in the location where the explosion happened and she was there when the tragic blast occurred on August 4, killing over 100 and injuring more than 4,000 people.

Facebook has deleted a post by Donald Trump for containing false claims about Covid-19. The post featured a link of a video of an interview the President granted Fox News on Wednesday morning,August 5, in which the president claimed children are ‘virtually immune’ to the virus. “This video includes false claims that a group of people is immune from Covid-19 which is a violation of our policies around harmful COVID misinformation,” Facebook spokesperson Andy Stone said in a statement Wednesday evening.

The Akwa Ibom state chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ini Okopido, has passed on. A top member of the party in the state, who confirmed the sad incident, disclosed that Okopido died in the early hours of Wednesday at the Ibom Multispecialty Hospital (IBH), Uyo. According to the source, Okopido died of multiple organ failure.

 

Italian football club Roma has been sold to a US business consortium Friedkin Group for €591 million (around $700 million). In a statement on Wednesday, Roma said that the club agreed with The Friedkin Group for the sale of the club, saying “the Transaction is valued at approximately Euro 591,000,000.” “I am pleased to confirm we have reached an agreement with The Friedkin Group for the sale of AS Roma,” Italian club’s president Jim Pallotta said.
