As the international community brainstorm on ways to about bring about the return of peace in Mali, A former president of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, is to lead some envoys to the African nation.

Jonathan is to lead ambassadors from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to Mali in the search for lasting solutions after the political unrest in the country climaxed into a coup, Channels TV reports.

As part of his responsibilities, the former Nigerian leader is to organise talks between the envoys and rival groups in Mali so as to restore democratic rule and processes.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that disturbing reports claimed that the prime minister of Mali, Boubou Cisse, and the nation’s president, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, were on Tuesday, August 18, arrested by some mutinying soldiers.

The leader of the soldiers informed journalists on Tuesday that Cisse and Keita are with them in Bamako, Mali’s capital. Confirming the development, a military official who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the duo were in an armoured vehicle bound for Kati.

Also, details of the discussion between Jonathan and President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, August 18, in Abuja had surfaced from the presidency.

As a special of the ECOWAS to Mali, Jonathan briefed President Buhari on his efforts and those of other global bodies to resolve the socio-political unrest threatening to tear the nation apart.

The former Nigerian leader told the president that while opposition political party, M5, has continued to insist on the resignation of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, international organisations like the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) had opted for peaceful dialogue as the best way forward.
