NANS Disrupt SUG Election At Federal Polytechnic Oko

The Students Union Government (SUG) election in the Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State was put to a halt as National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) disrupted the accreditation process for the election and demanded the removal of the Dean of Students’ Affairs of the Polytechnic.

The members of the NANS stormed Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State on the 15th of August, 2019 and disrupted the accreditation process for the Student Union Government (SUG) election on the notion that process of the election was not in line with the constitution of the Students Union Government (SUG) of the Institution.

According to an eye witness who spoke to Anaedoonline.com, “while accreditation for SUG election was ongoing, the members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) stopped the process of the accreditation, pursuing students who had already queued to be accredited for the election because the proposed e-voting was not in line with the constitution of SUG of Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State, which should be the foundation of any planned activities of the students of the institution.”

The members of the NANS continued their actions with the disqualification of some aspirants to various positions on the ground that aspirants did not meet up with qualification as demanded by the constitution.

Speaking further, the eye-witness said, “They disqualified some aspirants to certain positions unconstitutionally. For instance, they said that many aspirants from HND are disqualified on the ground that their ND Cumulative General Points (CGPs) are not up 3.0. I wonder why it should be so. While the constitution provided that in terms of the result, it should be the result of the semester preceding the election that would be considered.”

The members of the NANS carried on with their mandate as they called for the immediate impeachment of the Dean of Student Affairs whom they said had failed in carrying out his duty by not protecting the students in line with the protection rights of the constitution.

Mixed reactions followed the development among the students of the institution. While some hailed the NANS action, others vehemently condemned it.

The imbroglio between NANS and the school management has been ongoing, recall when NANS stormed the school to protest against the imposition of caretaker committee by the school authorities, to run the affairs of the Student Union Government.
